Aug. 22--MONTGOMERY, Ala--Overruling their chief justice in the face of an ultimatum from a federal judge, the eight associate justices of the Alabama Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously ordered the removal of a 2 1/2-ton monument of the 10 Commandments from the state's judicial building.
Writing that judges are "bound by solemn oath to follow the law, whether they agree or disagree with it," the eight justices told the judicial building manager to have the monument removed from public display, as federal courts have ordered. It was not clear when that would occur.
Hours later, a defiant Chief Justice Roy Moore, who had the monument installed in the building in the middle of the night two years ago, lashed out at his fellow justices for heeding the order of U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson.
