Jul. 10--An environmental watchdog group says a Superfund cleanup project to remove asbestos-contaminated sand and soil from Waukegan's lakefront is a sham and the government needs to start over.
About 14,000 cubic yards has been removed from the 3-acre site. But the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency needs to do more thorough sampling, expanded testing for possible toxins and deeper excavation to remove soil, Paul Kakuris, president of the Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society, said Tuesday.
