The alarm _ bordering on hysteria _ over West Nile virus has thrown many communities into turmoil. Officials report fielding hundreds of phone calls from worried homeowners who have spotted dead birds or who have been disturbed by media reports.
Over the weekend, Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned that the virus was an "emerging infectious disease epidemic."
Still, medical experts agree, there's no reason to panic.
