Sep. 14--San Joaquin County's unemployment rate for August was 8.1 percent, down more than a point from a revised 9.3 percent in July but up nearly a point from the 7.2 percent jobless rate recorded for August 2001, the state Employment Development Department reported Friday.
"Being up slightly over the year isn't that bad, considering the downturn in the economy, the effect of the terrorist attacks and the high-tech bust in Santa Clara County," said Liz Baker, EDD's San Joaquin/Stanislaus labor-market consultant.
"A lot of people could be going back to work in the Bay Area as well as San Joaquin County," she said. "Some employers are not being as cautious as perhaps they have been in the past."…
