PASIR PUTIH, Sun. - The Royal Malaysian Air Force will upgrade its airbase at Gong Kedak into a modern airbase following its decision to station the Russian-built Sukhoi Su-30 here, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
The 18 Sukhoi Su-30 multi-role combat jets, worth US$900 million (RM3.42 billion), ordered by the Government in 2003, are expected to arrive in 2006.
Najib said work on the airbase was expected to start in 2005.
"The allocation for upgrading is expected to be quite high. We will also lengthen the runway another 900 metres to station the Sukhois here," he said.
