Oct. 16--Wal-Mart Stores Inc., continuing its retail incursion into virtually every aspect of the American lifestyle, is about to begin stuffing customers' mailboxes with DVD rentals.
The ubiquitous discount chain launched an unlikely online service yesterday that will allow movie buffs to rent dozens of DVDs for a flat fee of $18.86 a month, with titles shipped to members and returned by them via free first-class mail.
Moreover, there are no late-return fees.
Wal-Mart's new venture indirectly pits it against big brick-and-mortar rental companies like Blockbuster, as well as smaller mom-and-pop video stores.
