Aug. 19--Bank of America Corp. confirmed layoffs Wednesday at FleetBoston Financial Corp. branches in the Northeast as the Charlotte-based company moves forward with its acquisition of New England's biggest bank.

Bank of America spokeswoman Eloise Hale would not provide the number of jobs cut, but said it was "significantly" less than the 1,500 reported by the Boston Globe, which cited an anonymous branch manager. Hale said the layoffs were part of the 12,500 positions the company previously has said would be eliminated in the merger.
