Untreated Anxiety Disorder. (Primary Care - Mental Health).
About half the patients with an anxiety disorder who are seen by a primary care physician remain untreated, based on a study of 504 patients.
In dealing with anxiety disorders, primary care physicians need to do a better job of diagnosis and treatment, Risa B. Weisberg said while presenting a poster at the annual meeting of the North American Primary Care Research Group.
She and her associates screened patients who were seen in any of 15 primary care clinics. Patients who screened positive for symptoms of anxiety disorder were further assessed with the Structural Clinical Interview for DSM-IV; a total of 504 patients met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder.
