Cardiac structure and function may be impaired early in the course of type 2 diabetes, and the abnormalities are nor closely related to blood sugar control, Dr. Jennifer E. Liu said at the annual scientific sessions of the American Diabetes Association.
Echocardiography was performed at the time of a second exam in 3,501 Native Americans. At the first exam, conducted an average of 3.4 years earlier, 1,136 of the participants had already developed type 2 diabetes. Another 170 participants did not have diabetes at the first exam but did have it at the time of the second exam; 1,079 remained normoglycemic throughout the course of the study.
