Jan. 30--As big airlines struggle with pared back schedules, AirTran Airways is sticking with its ambitious growth plans.
AirTran may add up to five cities to its route map this year and plans to boost seat capacity by 20 percent, said Joe Leonard, chief executive of Atlanta's second-largest carrier.
AirTran planned to grow between 15 percent and 20 percent in 2002 before the Sept. 11 hijackings shook the airline industry and torpedoed already slumping ticket sales.
Now, after initially cutting capacity in late September and October, it is trying to capitalize on decisions by other carriers to abandon markets.
