Feb. 20--A drug prescribed to build bone in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis may also reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular problems by 40 percent in patients who are at high risk for heart disease or who already have it, researchers at the University of California, San Diego, reported Tuesday.
The study is exciting because it offers new hope in treating heart disease, the biggest killer of women, while at the same time strengthening their bones, said Dr. Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, head of epidemiology at the university's division of family and preventive medicine.
