CHICAGO -- Preliminary data suggest that the tension-free vaginal tape procedure is as effective as the Burch colposuspension in the treatment of primary genuine stress incontinence, with a more rapid recovery time.
That finding emerged from a prospective trial reported by Dr. Paul Hilton at a Gynecare-sponsored satellite symposium held during the annual meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society Gynecare makes the TVT Tension-Free Support for Incontinence.
In the trial, 344 patients with genuine stress incontinence at 14 British hospitals were randomized to either colposuspension or the tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure, said Dr. Hilton, a urogynecologist and clinical director of women's services at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The TVT procedure was quicker, averaging 40 minutes in the operating room, compared with 52 minutes for the colposuspension procedure. Catheterization was required in the immediate postoperative period for 40% of the 175 TVT patients, compared with 100% of the 169 in the colposuspension group.
