Clean Doctor, Clean OR

I was surprised to learn that Dr. Harry Reich does not realize that one wears an operating mask to protect the operating room, as well as an open wound, from contamination ("Editor's Note," Oct. 15, 2001, p. 6).

Judging from the photo of his operating room, I fear he isn't too conscious of the need to have a clean operating room. I owned and operated a surgery center for 15 years and gained knowledge of proper operating room garb from good nurses.

Charles K. Fischer, M.D.

Criticizing the Critic

Dr. Harry Reich's comment that many U.S. gynecologic surgeons are "hyenas" who perform abdominal hysterectomies to remove small uteri when the operations could have been performed vaginally strikes an angry chord ("Club for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeons Spurs Controversy," Sept. 1, 2001, p. 5).
