Apr. 11--Monterey-based Language Line Services, the nation's largest translation business, is in the process of acquiring its closest competitor, Chicago-based Online Interpreters, which also maintains a sizable Monterey office.
The transaction surfaced this week in court records stemming from an FBI investigation into an alleged attempt by an Online employee to sell trade secrets to Language Line for $3 million, a scheme that officials of both companies helped thwart late last month.
Language Line officials would not comment Thursday on the acquisition, which reportedly is near completion.
