Apr. 29--SALIDA, Colo.--The Chaffee County Planning Commission will host a public meeting Tuesday to get input on a mica mine and mill application proposal submitted by the Tonto Apache Tribe of Payson, Ariz.
The proposal is meeting opposition from area residents.
The 40-acre open pit mine would be located near the summit of the 9,010-foot Poncha Pass. The tribe proposes to mine mica and silica sand for commercial marketing in an area located about 900 yards south of the Poncha Pass summit in Chaffee County.
Mica is used in construction materials, high-grade paints and cosmetics while silica and is used for glass products.
