April Unemployment Rate Drops to 5.8 Percent in Winston-Salem, N.C., Area.

May 25--The unemployment rate in the Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point metropolitan statistical area fell sharply to 5.8 percent in April from 6.1 percent in March, according to data released yesterday by the N.C. Employment Security Commission.

In Forsyth County the unemployment rate also fell -- from 5.4 percent in March to 5.3 percent in April. The figures are not seasonally adjusted.

The good news was widespread. Unemployment rates fell in 62 of North Carolina's 100 counties last month. Rates rose in only 21 counties while 17 were unchanged.
