North Carolina Should Diversify, Better Prepare Students, Experts Say.

May 24--HICKORY, N.C.--Given the thousands of jobs that have been lost in the textile, apparel and furniture industries in recent years, the word "globalization" is no stranger to North Carolina manufacturers.

But just how prepared is North Carolina for globalization and the changes that come with increased international competition?

"We are specialized in declining industries, and it's no surprise because those are what we targeted for years," Ed Feser of the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said yesterday "In fact, we were quite successful in getting them."
