NEW YORK _ First Lady Laura Bush and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took center stage at the Republican convention Tuesday night for a celebration of the American spirit that presented a sunny contrast to Monday's emphasis on the war on terror.
Hoping to win over swing voters, immigrants and women, Day Two of the Republican National Convention offered a message of hope and optimism during a time of war and economic difficulty. The roster of speakers was far more moderate than most of the 2,500 convention delegates and they focused on President Bush's softer side.
"Ladies and gentlemen, America is back," Schwarzenegger said, according to excerpts of his speech distributed before its delivery. "Back from the attack on our homeland, back from the attack on our economy, back from the attack on our way of life."
In a last-minute addition to the schedule, the twin Bush daughters took on the role of introducing their mother to the packed convention hall and a national television audience.
