NEW YORK _ Police began arresting throngs of protesters who were trying to march to Madison Square Garden without a city permit late Tuesday, as activists launched a wave of civil disobedience at various locations around Manhattan.
Arrest totals seemed certain to rise throughout the evening as activists pledged to make their way to the site of the GOP convention for a "die-in" against the war in Iraq.
"We're here to protest the Bush administration agenda of greed and war at home and abroad," said Ora Wise, of A31, the group organizing most of the day's resistance activities.
