BEERSHEVA, Israel _ Suicide bombers on Tuesday struck two buses almost simultaneously traveling a block apart in the Negev Desert city of Beersheba, killing at least 16 and wounding 85.
The Islamist militant group Hamas claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying in a leaflet that they were retaliation for Israel's killing of the group's two top leaders, Sheik Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi, in helicopter missile strikes in March and April.
"If you thought the martyrdom of our leaders would weaken our missions and discourage us from jihad, then you are dreaming," the statement read.
Israeli media, citing unnamed army sources, said the bombers appeared to have come from Hebron, about 30 miles northeast of Beersheva, and boarded the buses near the city's central terminal.
