These days a good soundtrack doesn't just revive memories of its movie or TV show, it also constitutes a mix of songs that fit together despite their diversity. The payoff: variety, a rare virtue these days. Here's a look at the best of the recent soundtrack releases.
_"Wicker Park" (Lakeshore Records) 3 { stars
This 17-track low-groove/funk-free compilation is a fat sack of prime-time treats from the worlds of indie-rock and bedroom indie-pop, much of it "exclusive" and "unreleased" (and not in the movie). "When I Goosestep" is an essential non-album track from the Shins; "A Movie Script Ending" is some acoustic hoo-hah from Death Cab for Cutie; "Against All Odds" is a nifty Phil Collins cover from the Postal Service; and "These Days" is a remake of the Nico/Velvet Underground version of the Jackson Browne song from Mates of State (released earlier this year as a vinyl single).
