NEW YORK _ That there would be a 2-mile-long river of protesters snaking through midtown Manhattan in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans 5 to 1 seems inconsequential in the grand scheme of all things political.

Because for all the pre-GOP convention hype about Sunday's mostly peaceful if at times raunchy protest against President Bush, it was the melodic sound of little liberty bells ringing at Ground Zero that inspired. There, where the World Trade Center towers once stood tall, the mood was appropriately solemn and humble Saturday. Hundreds of people came to pay their respects, to ring a little bell for peace.

There's a lot of angst and irony ...
