Many organizations find themselves having to streamline a very large IT applications portfolio because of application redundancy, application aging, and unnecessary complexity. Applications rationalization can reduce the cost, and maximize the value, of your IT applications portfolio.
What Makes IT Ineffective?
There are many problems that, over a period of time, hinder the effectiveness of IT. These problems are manifested by high maintenance and support costs, insufficient infrastructure, and projects with questionable ROI. Some of these problems are:
* Misaligned IT activities. This is the adoption of new technology that does not support business requirements. IT misalignment exists because of legacy systems and because business requirements change much more quickly than the supporting technology can be implemented.
* Redundant application functionality. This occurs when the number of applications increases due to either organizational growth or acquisition. Users from the acquiring company are known to keep 'pet' applications even when a replacement has been deployed.
* Complexity of application interaction. An increase in the number of applications also causes an increase in the complexity of their interaction. These independent applications must interact to fulfill operational requirements. Consequently, ensuring that they communicate and function correctly becomes more difficult.
