* Outpost Ice Arena competition attracts 25 players
For the second straight year, local baby boomers (born from 1946 to 1964) dominated the annual "Over Age 50" hockey game, played March 22 in Albuquerque.
With a minimum age of 50, "boomers" for this game would be ages 50 to 59.
Played at Outpost Ice Arena, the 2005 game attracted 25 players. As might be expected, there are no locally organized teams in that age bracket. Richard Olson, Fred Wakeham, Mike Maccini and Howard "Buck" Schreyer, all of Albuquerque's 32-year-old 30-30 hockey program for ages 30 and above, evaluated the talent and simply divided it equally into two teams.
The teams used away and home uniforms of the Albuquerque Chili Peppers, administered by Olson. The game used 30-30 program rules, the same rules used by many senior programs throughout the United States and Canada -- basic hockey except no checking and no slap shots.
"This year, we also planned on switching the goalies if one team scored five goals and had a two-goal lead," said Olson. "So if the rosters were not as balanced as planned, this would tend to even out the competition."
