Mar. 30--State law enforcement officers arrested seven Broward County residents and one Miami-Dade County man Tuesday on charges they illegally obtained traffic crash reports for a wide-ranging insurance fraud scheme.
State Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher said the suspects, posing as newspaper reporters, procured traffic-accident reports from police. These "runners" used these reports to solicit crash victims and passengers to visit medical clinics and body shops, even if they weren't injured or their cars weren't damaged.
Florida drivers are required to carry a minimum of $10,000 in personal injury protection, or PIP, so clinics and attorneys usually billed insurers...
