Mar. 30--Verizon Communications Inc. emerged the winner Tuesday -- for now -- in the bidding battle for long-distance carrier MCI Inc.

The MCI board is recommending that its shareholders approve Verizon's stock-and-cash offer of about $7.6 billion, up about $1.8 billion from Verizon's original deal approved by the MCI board Feb. 13.

But Denver-based Qwest Communications International Inc. launched a vigorous effort to snare MCI from Verizon. Qwest had an offer of $8.45 billion in cash and stock sitting on the table, with an April 5 deadline for MCI to accept or reject.
