As she does nearly every day, Lisa Soto was scanning news stories Tuesday morning when she found out her friend and former colleague, Las Vegas news anchorwoman Polly Gonzalez, had died Monday.

Soto, a news editor at a Sacramento television station who worked with Gonzalez in the Northern California community of Stockton in the late 1980s, echoed others who said the seasoned anchorwoman distinguished herself during a television news career that started at San Jose State University 20 years ago.

Gonzalez, an anchor for KLAS-TV, Channel 8, died Monday afternoon in a single-car accident while traveling near Death Valley with her two young daughters. Her children were not hurt.
