A federal judge has struck down a Nevada law that allowed the state Ethics Commission to impose fines on those who made false statements about political candidates.

In an order entered Tuesday, Senior U.S. District Judge Lloyd George declared the law unconstitutional, ruling that it violates the due process clause of the 14th Amendment.

"We are quite pleased, because we think it created a chilling effect on political discourse in the state of Nevada," attorney Allen Lichtenstein said. "And without it, speech will be freer about political topics, and that will be to the benefit of everybody."...
