Tamar Iveri wishes she had been born "in another epoch, when singers were treated like gods." As she reaches the latest milestone in an already dazzling career--her Met debut as Donna Anna--she muses, "Today, everything depends on promotion and publicity."
The lirico-spinto from the Republic of Georgia, now in her early thirties, came to prominence at Graz Opera, where her Desdemona and Elisabetta in Don Carlo quickly led to engagements as Mimi at Vienna's Staatsoper, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra at Covent Garden and Fiordiligi at the Salzburg Festival.
Iveri's sublime Adriana Lecouvreur in Graz conjured the sounds of Tebaldi and Cerquetti, making one wonder whether she listens to historic recordings. "I love Caruso, Ponselle--she was fantastic!--Kathleen Ferrier, Gigli, Titta Ruffo, Callas and Tebaldi," Iveri enthuses. "My dream is to sing next to singers like these." In Tbilisi, Iveri's childhood fantasies had been fueled by films of Mario Lanza and Deanna Durbin on TV.
