Mar. 27--MILLTOWN -- A tall, poised woman stands in the front window. She never says a word, yet her soft smile greets everyone who walks down Main Street and peers into a downtown dress shop.
Residents have come to know her well. Each month, they rush to the shop's display window to see what colorful threads the fashionista is wearing, whether a red-and-black sequin outfit in honor of Rutgers University's football team or an Easter-egg blue ensemble to usher in springtime.
The woman, a no-name mannequin, has been a fixture at Modern Maid Fashion Shoppe for years.
She is as much a part of Milltown's history as the 53-year-old specialty store she represents.
"People have always loved our window displays," store owner Diane Starek Pietrefesa said Friday afternoon. "I think people will miss that the most."
In about a month, Pietrefesa is closing Modern Maid and dismantling the now-famous mannequin ... much to the dismay of...
