Mar. 27--MAKING LIBRARY CENTRAL AGAIN: When the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library opened in 1982, it was a state-of-the-art facility. The Friends of the Dallas Public Library will remind you that the years and doubled patronage have changed all that.
When Dallas philanthropist and cultural maven Margaret McDermott dropped by the downtown library in the early 1990s, she was struck by the physical degradation of this important city asset.
Spurred to action, she rallied support for a complete renovation -- which is now about half-completed -- that exemplifies the best in private and public partnerships of the Friends and the city of Dallas.
