Mar. 25--SAYREVILLE -- The Sayreville Economic and Redevelopment Agency yesterday took possession of the 409-acre brownfield on the Raritan River once owned by NL Industries, ending a nearly decade-long effort to acquire the onetime industrial site for use as a waterfront development.

The ownership of the property, which the agency acquired for $33.55 million, will allow the borough to move forward with plans to build a public waterfront area and promenade on the site, which once housed titanium-dioxide and sulfuric-acid manufacturing operations. While some developers looked at the property in the past, borough officials said, the continuing dispute over the property's ownership turned most off.
