Mar. 24--Bill Diggs was supposed to be a Secret Service agent.

For three years, while attending Clark Atlanta University, Diggs worked for the Secret Service doing everything from emptying trash cans and taking care of agency vehicles to investigating check fraud. He was being groomed, he said, to be an agent.

Then he changed his mind.

"I was months away from going to the Secret Service academy, but I told my boss that I couldn't do this," Diggs said. "I didn't want to carry a gun."

Instead, Diggs pursued a career in telecommunications, which didn't require him to pack heat. He also started a nonprofit organization. On Jan. 3, he took on a new challenge, becoming president/CEO of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce.
