Named after a mythical bird of fire reborn from its own ashes, the 2005 Polaris Phoenix's name suggests it's one hot model. It's not necessarily blazing because of a mind-blowing performance package, but prized because it actually exists.

In the Harry Potter movies, the Phoenix also has supernatural healing powers. While the Polaris Phoenix won't cure illnesses or injuries, it can fix a gap in the Polaris lineup. Polaris dealers have been pleading for an entry-level four-stroke sport quad for more than four years. The Trail Blazer 250, a two-stroke, just wasn't as appealing as competitive bikes from some of the Japanese manufacturers. The Phoenix has officially taken flight and, through January, has already soared to the No. 2 selling quad for Polaris.

WHY NO. 2?

The Polaris Phoenix is appealing because it offers a larger-than-normal size, sporty fun and an affordable price. A $2,999 introductory price helped it move out of dealerships. As of March, the retail cost increased to $3,199. Polaris says the price increase was unavoidable thanks to rising commodity prices. The price of aluminum, steel, plastic resin, oils and fuels have affected the entire powersports industry, according to Polaris.

The Phoenix's original price was also because Taiwanese-based Aeon, which produces the Polaris youth quads, manufactured the quad for Polaris. The Polaris engineering team played a key role in the design of the Phoenix. Everything on the ATV was built according to Polaris specifications and guidelines. The production version has changed significantly since the model was first introduced six months ago, says Polaris.
