Mar. 1--Starting today Hoosiers can access their credit reports -- at no charge.
It's due to a new federal law passed last year, the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act, aimed at combating identity theft. The savings to each consumer would be about $30.
By making the reports free, the law's backers hope to encourage consumers to keep a close watch on their credit, in effect deputizing them against identity theft, a growing concern. By regularly looking over their credit reports, says Federal Trade Commission spokeswoman Jen Schwartzman, consumers can quickly spot something fishy and take steps.
