FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Colleges across the country got their warnings Monday when the NCAA made public the new report cards it sent to schools last week letting them know how their student-athletes had done in the classroom.
Next year come the penalties, when an unacceptable Academic Progress Rate will mean scholarships won't be filled if a student-athlete flunks out and leaves school.
"The point is to change behavior," said Walter Harrison, president of the University of Hartford and chairman of the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance. "This is meant to send a signal to presidents, athletic directors and coaches that you are heading in the wrong direction."
