Mar. 1--TORRINGTON, Conn. -- An Enfield auction firm plans to sell off a chunk of Rexam Cosmetic Packaging Inc.'s equipment today, as the longtime area manufacturer continues winding down its city operations.
Capital Recovery Group has listed more than 650 items, or groups of items, for sale, including injection-molding machinery, machine shop equipment and office fixtures, as well as decorating, assembly, finishing and packaging equipment. The auction, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rexam's 129 Industrial Lane plant, comes as the London-based company wraps up its local production there.
Rexam announced in May it was shutting down its two Torrington operations, where about 150 people at the time manufactured lipstick cases for the cosmetics industry. The company said some of the work would move to a Rexam plant in Wisconsin, some to Brazil and some possibly to China.
Monday afternoon, only limited production and a smattering of employees remained at the roughly 58,200-square-foot Industrial Lane plant, where potential bidders inspected various equipment tagged for sale. Additional items at Rexam's roughly 45,000-square-foot -- and largely vacant -- facility at 230 Ella Grasso Ave. was also available for inspection.
Those buildings, both in Torrington's industrial park in Burrville, are not included in the auction and have been listed for sale by Real Estate Acquisitions & Disposals, a Boca Raton, Fla., real estate ...
