Feb. 28--Madeleine Calder has produced ostrich hot dogs, and she stuffs ostrich ravioli. She has touted the health benefits of her favorite meat in a dozen Food Network appearances.
But that hasn't stopped State Sen. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge, from proposing ending an exemption from Florida's sales tax for ostrich feed. For a full-grown bird, that would add a couple hundred dollars to Calder's costs each year. Calder is raising 12 ostriches on her five-acre spread near Loxahatchee.
"We're operating on a very thin margin anyway," said Calder, who also runs www.gour metostrich.com. "There's no real reason for it."
