Feb. 28--New Spherion Corp. Chief Executive Roy G. Krause says he reminds himself everyday that the Fort Lauderdale staffing and recruiting company is in the "selling" business.

For Krause, who was Spherion's chief financial officer for eight years before being named as its principal officer, the career shift has been an adjustment.

"Balancing what I used to do with what I should do now and what I am doing now is probably the biggest personal challenge," says Krause, who now routinely meets with customers rather than crunching numbers.

Krause was promoted to president and chief operating officer in July 2003 after then-CEO Cinda A. Hallman fell ill. Hallman left in April and Krause was tapped to fill the post in October.

Since taking the helm, Krause has embarked on making Spherion into a more efficient business. The former Fortune 500 company's 18 operating segments have been consolidated into just two: staffing and professional...
