Feb. 28--For decades, the Hays Street Bridge ferried residents from the East Side to downtown, allowing them to avoid railroad tracks. Now, the bridge is looking for some support of its own.
The Hays Street Bridge Restoration Group -- a grass-roots network of neighborhood groups, engineers, the city, the San Antonio Conservation Society and bridge preservationists -- is holding its first fund-raiser Wednesday. Organizers hope the event raises awareness of the bridge, its history and plans for its future.
