Recruiting Tactics
Workforce Week reports that the federal government faces tough times when it comes to recruiting new workers. First, it's competing with the private sector for the most talented scientists, engineers, nurses and other workers. On top of that, as baby boomers retire, fewer younger workers are available to replace them.
The Partnership for Public Service and the National Academy of Public Administration recently released a study of hiring needs throughout major federal agencies. Among suggestions:
** Federal agencies should develop recruiting plans and update them annually.
** The way the federal government classifies jobs must be improved to be made more consistent with the job categories used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
** The government should develop state-of-the-art recruitment materials to improve the image of professional government service.
