JUPITER, Fla. _ Guillermo Mota picked out one of the baseball cards from the box sitting in the Florida Marlins' clubhouse. He taped it above his locker, next to his nameplate.

It serves as a reminder of what he's working toward this spring.

The name and image above Mota's stall: Eric Gagne.

Arguably the game's best setup man the last two seasons, Mota has graduated to the closer's role. It's the job he's coveted since the 1999 season in Montreal, where he was Ugueth Urbina's understudy. How effectively Mota handles the ninth inning may prove among the most significant factors in establishing the Marlins as viable postseason contenders.
