CLEARWATER, Fla. _ It's quiet. Almost too quiet.
That's the lingering impression after a couple of days in soggy Pinellas County. There is, in the signature phrase of the recently departed Dr. Gonzo, fear and loathing all around baseball this spring.
Barry Bonds transformed a news conference into a street-corner rant. Sammy Sosa turned up in the Baltimore Orioles camp, still firing away at his old employers in Chicago. And then there are the Red Sox and Yankees, who lobbed shells between Fort Myers and Tampa until it escalated. Sooner or later, someone drops an A-Rod bomb.
And let's not forget the steroids. This is the spring of the name-that-juicer parlor game, thanks to Jose Canseco's finger-pointing memoir and continuing BALCO fallout. Who's in the clear? Who's on the clear? At camps all around...
