SURPRISE, Ariz. _ Life is an endless summer for Justin Huber, an Australian native whose search is not for the perfect wave but rather a quicker path to regular duty in the Kansas City Royals' lineup.
Observe his conversion this spring from catcher to first baseman, under the instruction of George Brett, among others.
Even so, Huber admits to some doubts.
"In my heart," he said, "I haven't fully given up on catching yet. I feel I'm still there mentally, anyway. But I'm working out at first. I think that's a pretty good indication of how things are going for me."
The position switch is more an indication that the Royals want to find a way to get Huber's bat in the lineup.
"Obviously, John Buck is our guy behind the plate," general manager Allard Baird said. "But we see good offensive upside with Huber. His bat is going to carry him.
