Stock Funds Attract $8.7 Billion Inflow; Down From December; Those that invest abroad draw the lion's share; bond funds get $4.8 bil.(MUTUAL FUNDS)(INVESTMENT TRENDS)

Mutual fund stock investors continued to warm to overseas markets in January.
Flow into U.S.-focused long-term stock funds slowed during the month. Those funds attracted inflow of $656 million in January vs. $2.4 billion in December 2004.
But funds primarily investing in foreign stocks had inflow of $8.1 billion in January, the Investment Company Institute said. A month earlier they pulled in $7.8 billion.
Together, that left the first month of 2005 with $8.7 billion total inflow to stock funds. That compares with $10.3 billion for December and an average $26.44 billion the past five Januarys.
