Feb. 22--Troubled High Street chain Marks & Spencer was at the centre of the City rumour mill again today, after reports of a hostile bid by a mysterious South African and a statement from Philip Green officially stating he is not preparing a takeover.

Shares in Marks & Spencer initially rose close to 18-month highs as speculators attempted to digest reports of a potential 410p cash offer for the company before slipping 5p to 36 2 1/2p after Green, the group's arch-stalker and odds-on favourite to relaunch his interest in the chain, came clean and said he is not preparing a bid.
