JUPITER, Fla. _ Preparing for his 18th season in the big leagues and at the ripe-old age of 40, Lenny Harris figures it's about time to clear up a misconception.
The Marlins' veteran doesn't relish the role of pinch-hitter.
"I love playing," said Harris, the all-time leader in pinch-hits with 193. "Who wants to sit on the bench all the time?"
In fact, Harris remembers like it was yesterday how he became a pinch-hitter.
"In L.A., (manager) Tommy (Lasorda) sat me one day and gave Mike Sharperson a start at third base," Harris said. "With runners on first and second, Tommy told me to be ready to hit, and I won the game off the bench."
