Feb. 23--Spurred by a rush of speculators, crude oil leapt above the $50 mark Tuesday to its highest point in almost four months.

Oil for March delivery gained $2.80, or almost 6 percent, to $51.20 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
