Feb. 23--American Airlines Inc. won tentative approval Tuesday for a coveted route to China, though it will have to wait a year to launch service.

Beginning in March 2006, American will be able to start flying seven times a week to Shanghai from its hub at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
