Feb. 21--Caught in the Univision Communications corporate maelstrom is Ray Rodriguez, a slightly built man with salt-and-pepper hair who still pals around with friends from Christopher Columbus High School and will celebrate his 30th wedding anniversary in June.
"He always does things quietly," said Juan Carlos Sanchez, who's known him since adolescence. "That's who he is. It's kind of boring really."
Rodriguez's character fits neatly with Univision Chairman and Chief Executive Jerry Perenchio's corporate culture of hermetism and loyalty. Univision employees can be fired for speaking to the media -- Perenchio once fined Rodriguez $25,000 for giving an interview to Broadcasting & Cable magazine -- and former staffers are never rehired.
